Hyenas are known for their unique hunting techniques. According to The Star1, hyenas can be spotted staring at the sky during the day, taking cues from circling vultures as their unique GPS system to locate a kill. However, hyenas can also pose a threat to humans and it is important to know how to react in case of an encounter.

The Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) has provided safety tips to avoid hyena attacks 1. If you encounter a hyena, it is important to remain calm and avoid running away. Hyenas are predators and will instinctively chase animals that run away. Instead, try to show that you are fearless and keep yourself calm by talking to the hyena 1.

If the hyena growls or giggles, stand your ground and never run away, but at the same time, don’t move any closer. Make a loud noise, be aggressive, and frightening as if you are going to attack 1. Avoid lying down or pretending to be dead as this will increase the animal’s curiosity. Hyenas are nocturnal, so it is advisable to minimize movements at night and not move away until the hyena does. When you do move, continue to face its direction 1.

Remember, hyenas are useful scavengers that clean the ecosystem by getting rid of discarded bones and debris, thus preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases 1. It is important to respect their role in the ecosystem and take necessary precautions to avoid any unwanted encounters.
