Melania also thanked the doctors and nurses who cared for her mother during her illness, and asked for privacy as the family grieves.

Amalija Knavs was born in Slovenia in 1945 and married Viktor Knavs in 1967. They had two children, Melania and Ines. The couple moved to the United States in 2006 and became naturalized citizens in 2018.

Amalija was a supportive presence in Melania’s life, often accompanying her to public events and spending time with her grandson Barron. She also helped Melania with her initiatives as the first lady, such as the Be Best campaign and the White House Christmas decorations.

Former president Donald Trump also expressed his condolences to his wife and her family, calling Amalija’s death a “sad night for the entire Trump family.”

In a statement, he said: “Amalija was an incredible woman who loved her family dearly. She was smart, elegant, and graceful. She had a great relationship with Melania and me, and we will always remember her fondly. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.”
