Court Jails 24-Year-Old Man Who Assaulted Police Officer

Kakamega Principal Magistrate J.J Masiga has sentenced 24-year-old Tyson Kayesi to seven years in prison for assaulting a police officer. The incident occurred in May 2024 when Kayesi assaulted the officer who was on duty.

In a statement released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Tuesday, June 4, it was confirmed that Kayesi’s actions caused harm to the police officer. The court found him guilty of willfully assaulting a police officer in Kakamega, contrary to section 103(a) of the National Police Act.

uring the sentencing, Magistrate Masiga emphasized that incidents of assaulting police officers are becoming rampant nationwide. To deter such behavior, a custodial sentence was deemed the most suitable punishment for anyone intending to commit this offense.

The accused, Tyson Kayesi, initially refused to take a plea on two occasions. However, he eventually pleaded guilty to four counts during the trial. The court upheld the minimum sentence as prescribed by the law.
