Kirinyaga County is mourning the loss of 20 people who died after drinking a killer brew that was laced with methanol, a toxic substance used in antifreeze and fuel.
The victims, mostly men, started developing symptoms such as blurred vision, vomiting, and abdominal pain after consuming the cheap liquor from local vendors in Kandongu village.
Three more people succumbed on Friday, bringing the death toll to 20. More than five others are still fighting for their lives in various hospitals in the county.
The tragedy has sparked outrage and grief among the residents, who have called on the government to take action against the unscrupulous traders who sell the deadly brew.
On Thursday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki visited the area and assured the locals that the government will not spare anyone involved in the illicit liquor trade.
He said that the government will intensify the crackdown on illegal alcohol and enhance public awareness on the dangers of consuming such drinks.
He also urged the public to report any suspicious activities or persons to the authorities and to avoid buying alcohol from unlicensed outlets.
He condoled with the families of the deceased and wished the survivors a quick recovery.
He said that the government will cater for the medical expenses of the victims and provide support to the bereaved families.
The Kirinyaga County Commissioner, Jim Njoka, said that the police have arrested several suspects in connection with the incident and are conducting investigations to establish the source and distribution of the killer brew.
He warned that anyone found culpable will face the full wrath of the law and appealed to the public to cooperate with the security agencies in the fight against illicit liquor.
He also urged the residents to embrace alternative sources of income and shun alcoholism, which he said is a major social and economic problem in the county.
