MOMBASA, Kenya - The Port of Mombasa welcomed the cruise vessel World Odyssey, the world’s largest floating campus, for the third time on Friday, February 9, 2024.

The World Odyssey is a cruise ship that operates as a mobile university for the Semester at Sea program, an educational initiative that offers students from around the world the opportunity to study and travel across multiple continents and cultures.

The ship, which can accommodate up to 636 students and 290 crew members, departed from Tokyo, Japan on January 5, 2024, and has since visited ports in South Korea, China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and India. Mombasa is the seventh stop on its 106-day itinerary, which will end in Bremerhaven, Germany on April 20, 2024.

According to the Semester at Sea website1, the students on board the World Odyssey are enrolled in courses ranging from anthropology and economics to marine biology and photography, taught by faculty from various universities and institutions. The students also participate in field programs and service projects in each port, engaging with local communities and cultures.

The World Odyssey, formerly known as MS Deutschland, was launched in 1998 and is decorated in the 1920s style. The ship features a library, a fitness center, a swimming pool, a spa, a theater, and several dining venues. The ship is registered in the Bahamas and is owned by Absolute Nevada LLC, a company based in Las Vegas, USA.

The Port of Mombasa, the largest and busiest seaport in East Africa, has been hosting cruise ships since 2005, when it received the first cruise vessel, MS Astor. The port has been expanding its facilities and services to attract more cruise tourism, which contributes to the local economy and showcases the region’s attractions and heritage.

The World Odyssey is expected to stay in Mombasa for three days, during which the students and crew will explore the city and its surroundings, including the historical Fort Jesus, the Old Town, the Haller Park, and the Mombasa Marine National Park. The ship will then sail to Port Louis, Mauritius, its next destination.
