Grief as Church Elder Collapses, Dies on Church Pulpit While Addressing Congregants

Ruiru, Kenya – A routine Sunday service turned tragic on May 19 when retired Elder Eng. Kenneth Kungu Wainaina collapsed and died while addressing congregants at a church in Ruiru. The shocking incident has left the church community in mourning.



In a video that has since gone viral, Wainaina was seen speaking to the congregation when he suddenly lost consciousness. The video captures the heartbreaking moment he stopped mid-speech, put down the microphone, and collapsed. Despite immediate efforts from fellow elders to revive him, Wainaina was pronounced dead shortly after.


The 67-year-old's family confirmed the tragic news through an obituary on Google. "With deep sorrow and humble acceptance of God's will, we, the family announce the passing of Rtd Elder Eng. Kenneth Kungu Wainaina on 19th May 2024," it read.


During his final address, Wainaina reflected on the church's history and vision. "We came to this place in the year 2005 on June 19. We are only one month less than 19 years," he remarked. His demeanor showed no signs of distress, making the sudden collapse all the more shocking. Moments before he fell, a woman in the congregation was heard screaming.


Among Wainaina’s last words were, "God our light, our hope, and our strength."


Wainaina will be laid to rest on Tuesday, May 28. The church and the community continue to grapple with the loss of a respected elder whose commitment and service have left an indelible mark.
