Cheruiyot Kirui, a Kenyan banker who tragically died while scaling Mount Everest, will not be repatriated to Kenya. After extensive consultations, his family has made the heart-wrenching decision to leave his body on the mountain, citing the extreme risks involved in retrieving it.

In a press release on Wednesday, May 30, the family explained their decision, emphasizing the dangers posed to any rescue team attempting to recover Kirui’s body, which is located 48 meters from the summit in the notorious "death zone" above 8,000 meters.

“This decision was made after extensive consultations and careful consideration of all circumstances. Cheruiyot fell into a crevasse near the summit, and retrieving his body would be risky for the rescue team; the family does not wish to endanger any life,” the family stated.

Cheruiyot’s love for the mountains provided some solace to his grieving family, who found comfort in knowing he rests in a place he cherished. “We appreciate the love and condolence messages received from relatives, friends, and the outdoor community,” they added.

The family also expressed gratitude for the support from Cheruiyot’s employer, Kenya Commercial Bank, and announced memorial services in Nairobi and his hometown in Chepterit, Nandi County. Contributions to support the family can be made via pay bill 522533, account 9229224, under Cheruiyot Kirui Fundraising.

The announcement elicited a strong reaction from the Kenyan community:

- Hellen Muturi: “That was the best decision they have ever made. Why get him out of where he cherished to get to? Rest in the mountain, Cheruiyot.”

- Dorcas Tarus: "May God comfort his family."

- Janns Sangiey: “Rest well, champion. You dared your fears and intrigues. You died doing what you loved.”

- Mum Sherry: “The most painful decision to the parents

Kirui and his guide went missing in the 'death zone' on May 22, 2024. Despite an outpouring of prayers and hopes for his safe return, Kirui’s body was discovered a few meters from the peak, frozen, and unreachable without significant risk and cost.

The family reflected on Kirui’s remarkable journey and his enduring passion for climbing, which he pursued from a young age. His legacy will continue to inspire many in the mountaineering community and beyond.
